Beyond Flat

Depth and dimensionality in digital design.
Flat design once liberated interfaces from ornamentation. But it also stripped them of depth — of tactility and mood.
The next evolution isn’t a return to realism, but an exploration of perceived depth: motion, shadow, layering, parallax, and time. These create hierarchy and narrative without clutter.
Depth is how a system communicates relationships — what leads, what follows, what responds. It’s the difference between static layout and living interface.
To move beyond flat is to embrace dimensional thinking — designing not just what’s seen, but what’s felt through sequence and space.
Flatness is clarity; depth is presence. Design needs both.
